NEWFOUND SPECIES

Sofía Casero

We are going to work on shape, form and texture.
Your goal is to create a new animal out of a part.
You´ll be given two legs of the original animal and you´ll have to integrate them so that you can´t find any difference between the piece of paper you´ve been given and your own drawing.
You will use an HB pencil, fine liners and a black pen to get if you wish the same shades of grey that you can find on the original drawing.
(This brilliant idea belongs to Dácil Velázquez.)

SKETCHING

I´ll give you four small squares from the original print of Durer and you´ll try to imagine and draw four different animals with these features. You´ll glue these squares on a DIN A4 sheet of paper.

We´ll invest a whole hour to get the shape of the four animals and I´ll collect them all by the end of the class.

Christmas crafts II (Icosahedron)

In geometry an icosahedron is a polyhedron with 20 faces.

Each  has 30 edges and 20 equilateral triangle faces with five meeting at each of its twelve vertices.

Here you have a video  about how to make a scrapbooking ball like the one on the picture.
In class we are going to use english subtitles and no voice at all.

If you want to download a template just to print it out (four times to get 24 faces) here you´ve got the file.

You will need a compass, a pair of scissors, a ruler, a pencil, glue stick and, of course, paper (scrapbooking paper, craft paper or the one you prefer). If you want to hang it, you will also need fishing line or another kind of thread.

Christmas crafts (stars)

http://www.guiademanualidades.com/estrellada-navidad-16352.htm
We can work with pentagons to make five pointed stars or with hexagons to get six pointed ones.
We´ll use hexagons because drawing them is by far  easier than drawing  pentagons.
Just in case you don´t have a compass you can follow the steps below.
How to draw an hexagon accurately (using a compass).

If you want to get 3D stars here you´ll find the steps and the template to print it out.

COLOUR THEORY/COLOUR WHEEL

Just in case you want to download this notes click here.

We are going to work on colour drawing a colour wheel using primary and secondary colours
We´ll talk about warm and cool colours and complementary colours as well.
Just in case you want to know more about colour theory, here you have a very useful link.

SHADING (VALUES)

Value is one of the seven elements of art. It refers to the relative level of darkness or lightness of a colour in terms of contrast.

The other six elements are:
-Line
-Shape
-Form
-Space
-Colour
-Texture

We will learn how to use all of them on our next works of art.

Click on the picture bellow to get an idea of how to draw basic shapes and make them look realistic by shading them.
We are only going to use graphite pencils for now. You´ll need two of the  pencils that I told you to buy, the HB and 2B.

This is going to be our next work of art.
If you want to download the file and print it out, You can do so here .

The drawing below belongs to Elisa R. Great!

When drawing with only one colour you can use different techniques like the ones shown in the picture.

USING THE GRID METHOD FOR DRAWING

Here you have the project just in case you need to print it out.

We can use the same method to distort an image.
Do you know anything about anamorphosis?

An anamorphosis is a deformed image that appears in its true shape when viewed in some "unconventional" way.
We can find many examples on our daily life, the most common use of the anamorphic design is by far in road markings.
We have to see those marks from our vehicles in such a low point of view that they are going to be percieved distorted and shorter than they actually are.

Julian Beaver is a well known street artist. He has made pavement drawings all over the world for many years.
Anamorphic illusions drawn in a special distortion in order to create an illusion of 3 dimensions when seen from one particular point of view.

Here you have an easy project.

Let´s get started

Here you have the list of the supplies you'll need.

Can you trust your eyes?

Optical illusions and visual perception from ESTER ALONSO

DRAGON ILLUSION

This is a wonderful optical illusion. This little dragon is made out of paper. You cut it out and stick it together, and stand it on a table. When you move around, the dragon´s head seems to follow you around the room. Have a look at the video to see what I mean.
http://www.grand-illusions.com/opticalillusions/dragon_illusion/

How does it work?
If we move around when viewing a solid object, our brain knows how the object we are looking at should behave. However the dragon gives us the wrong clues, because we mis-interpret what its shape is. We assume that the nose of the dragon is pointing out towards us. but in fact the dragon´s head is concave.
If you want to try this illusion yourself, download the file and print it out. Notice that the instructions for folding and cutting out the dragon are included.

DESIGNING A CHARACTER BASED ON GEOMETRY

Alejandra García 1º ESO D

This idea belongs to Margarita González

We are going to use what we know about regular inscribed polygons to divide a circumference and draw an incredible character using the lines and arcs given.
It is important to work on at least 5 different circumferences so that you can choose the best option, not just the first character that you draw.

Drawing an animal is not your only option, your character can also be a person, an alien or whatever you want it to be.
Change its features and try new ones on each sketch.

So far, there is no need to think about colours or textures. This is only our first approach to the shape and the appearance of our creature.

Feel free to experiment and have fun...!!!

On this online magazine you will find much more examples (pages 26-41).
There are awesome characters made by my former head of department: Margarita González  with her students.

To print out the worksheet click on the picture above
Now that you know the way your character looks you have to draw only one of them.
Make sure that you use the measures given bellow.
