DRAWING TECHNIQUES

It is always a good idea to use the Blocking in technique to produce a drawing. Blocking in means that you use basic shapes to get it easier to make a drawing. These basic shapes, such as triangles, circles, rectangles...are used for sketching and after doing it you can fill in the details and volume by shading.
We are going to draw a kitten, that´s a young cat, following the steps given on the video.
You can sketch other animals in a similar way. Why don´t we give it a try?
I will also give you a handout as a guide, and we will play with the new words related to technique, lines and the animal itself .
Here you have a study set about lines that I have made using Quizlet.
Don´t forget about choosing other study options (there are quite a few).
And what about a brief quiz using GeoGebra?
You will only need a blank sheet of paper and two pencils, the intermediate or HB for sketching, and the softer and darker one, B2, for shading.

HOMEWORK
I wonder if you could do it even better. Try to draw another animal following similar steps. I like this Yorkie but its up to you to choose a different animal amongst all that you can find in this playlist.
You´ve got a plenty of time to do it at your own pace.

A family guide to HOUSE MONSTERS

"It has been some time since the existence of House Monsters was first discovered. House monsters are creatures that live in our homes and create all sorts of mischief. They trip us up, they tug at us and they are always plotting and scheming to make our daily lives just that little bit more complicated than we would like".

INSCRIBED REGULAR POLYGONS (GENERAL METHOD)

HEPTAGON

In this particular case there is no need to divide the diameter into equal parts using the Thales Theorem.

Add colour to your polygon by using a pattern to easily distinguish between both star polygons.

Drawing with the compass

A compass is a technical drawing instrument that can be used for inscribing circles or arcs. They can also be used as tools to measure distances, in particular on maps.
Compasses are usually made of metal or plastic, and consist of two parts connected by a hinge which can be adjusted to allow the changing of the radius of the circle drawn. Typically one part has a spike at its end, and the other part a pencil, or sometimes a pen.

PARTS OF A COMPASS

Handle

Users can grip it between their pointer finger and thumb.

Legs

There are two types of legs in a compass: the straight or the steady leg and the adjustable one. Each has a separate purpose; the steady leg serves as the basis or support for the needle point, while the adjustable leg can be altered in order to draw different sizes of circles.

Hinge

The screw on your hinge holds the two legs in its position; the hinge can be adjusted depending on desired stiffness. The tighter the screw the better the compass’ performance.

Needle point

The needle point is located on the steady leg, and serves as the center point of circles that are drawn.

Pencil lead

The pencil lead draws the circle on a particular paper or material.

It is not easy to work with a compass accurately but I´m sure that you´ll try your best.

Remember that practice makes perfect

This  handout is going  to help you with the dimensions.´

You´ll have to work with colour but selecting a pattern such as working with cool and warm colours or trying to find another type of harmony (monochrome, analogous colours...)

NOTAN: AXIAL SYMMETRY/POSITIVE & NEGATIVE SPACE

Nōtan (濃淡?) is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark elements as they are placed next to the other in the composition of art and imagery.

It´s important to keep the composition balanced.
We can use a seesaw as a good example.

NEWFOUND SPECIES

Sofía Casero

We are going to work on shape, form and texture.
Your goal is to create a new animal out of a part.
You´ll be given two legs of the original animal and you´ll have to integrate them so that you can´t find any difference between the piece of paper you´ve been given and your own drawing.
You will use an HB pencil, fine liners and a black pen to get if you wish the same shades of grey that you can find on the original drawing.
(This brilliant idea belongs to Dácil Velázquez.)

SKETCHING

I´ll give you four small squares from the original print of Durer and you´ll try to imagine and draw four different animals with these features. You´ll glue these squares on a DIN A4 sheet of paper.

We´ll invest a whole hour to get the shape of the four animals and I´ll collect them all by the end of the class.

Christmas crafts II (Icosahedron)

In geometry an icosahedron is a polyhedron with 20 faces.

Each  has 30 edges and 20 equilateral triangle faces with five meeting at each of its twelve vertices.

Here you have a video  about how to make a scrapbooking ball like the one on the picture.
In class we are going to use english subtitles and no voice at all.

If you want to download a template just to print it out (four times to get 24 faces) here you´ve got the file.

You will need a compass, a pair of scissors, a ruler, a pencil, glue stick and, of course, paper (scrapbooking paper, craft paper or the one you prefer). If you want to hang it, you will also need fishing line or another kind of thread.

Christmas crafts (stars)

http://www.guiademanualidades.com/estrellada-navidad-16352.htm
We can work with pentagons to make five pointed stars or with hexagons to get six pointed ones.
We´ll use hexagons because drawing them is by far  easier than drawing  pentagons.
Just in case you don´t have a compass you can follow the steps below.
How to draw an hexagon accurately (using a compass).

If you want to get 3D stars here you´ll find the steps and the template to print it out.
